How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic trays. Some appliances are recommended at the beginning or during treatment to achieve the best result and occlusion for a beautiful smile that will last a lifetime. With today’s technology, the arch wires move the teeth faster and with less discomfort. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. You can choose brackets that are clear or metal and you can choose the color of the ties that hold the wires in place.

Length of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from 18-24 months, depending on the patient’s growth and the severity of the problem. The eruption of teeth and growth of a child or adolescent is different for everyone. Each individual will respond differently to orthodontic treatment, so the time to complete a case may be different from the original estimated treatment time. The patient’s cooperation with appliances and rubber bands are an important factor in achieving the most efficient treatment. Interceptive or early treatment procedures are normally estimated to take 8-12 months.
